 Falls Church, Virginia

Falls Church, Virginia is just inside the Capital Beltway, a perfect spot for those commuting to work in downtown Washington, D.C or those working in tech firms in McLean or nearby areas. Smaller than Arlington, and more community-oriented than McLean and other communities along the 66 corridor, Falls Church is an affordable, pleasant neighborhood for residents of all ages and occupations.

Tree City USA

When thinking about urban areas such as Falls Church, trees may not be the first thing that come to mind. Falls Church, however, is different. In April 2008, Falls Church was named a Tree City USA city by the National Arbor Day Foundation. Falls Church has an active Urban Forestry program, including a neighborhood tree program in which community residents purchase trees for right-of-ways and parks. Falls Church has eleven municipal parks within its boundaries that offer lighted basketball courts, tennis, volleyball, playgrounds and picnic areas. There are many outdoor activities for residents young and old.

International Residents

Falls Church students are served by the Falls Church City Public Schools. The high school has 1900 students, among which 95% go on to post-secondary education. The SAT average of the main high school is a staggering 1737. Within the schools, students speak 32 languages and are from countries around the world, making the school day a diverse educational experience. There are, on average, only 13 students per teacher, providing quality, personal attention to each student.

Affordable Real Estate that Retains Value

Available jobs in Falls Church have grown by 2% in the last year, which is contrary to most of the United States, making it a great place to live and work. Homes for sale in Falls Church have been affected by the housing bubble, but have still risen in value an average of $50,000 over the last five years. Currently, real estate for sale in Falls Church is down about 10% in price from last year, making homes more affordable than ever. Real Estate sales rates have stayed steady throughout the year.

Eighty percent of the homes in Falls Church were built between 1940 and 1980, and are solidly built, arranged in neighborhoods with mature trees—rare with new construction out in the suburbs. Its central location makes it a great place for commuters in each direction. Most residents have a drive between 15 and 30 minutes to reach their place of employment.

Falls Church Community Arts and Activities

Falls Church was founded in 1699, making it one of the oldest cities in the United States. It has thrived, grown and changed over the years, but is still a close-knit community, full of opportunities and activities. Residents of Falls Church throw a spectacular Memorial Day parade each year, complete with community-wide activities. A Civil War day provides education and remembrance.

One of the most delightful and community-wide events is the “First Friday Event,” hosted by locations around the city. Business owners have found the event to produce 20% increases in business, but residents just have fun. While many community “First Friday” events are mostly art-related, Falls Church’s First Fridays have something for everyone. Their website details all of the activities: http://www.firstfridayoffallschurch.com/home.html including some pretty interesting opportunities! The Clay Café Studios, a paint-your-own pottery venue hosts Karaoke every first Friday. You can “sing for your pottery” to receive a discount and enjoy light munchies. For early-bird crafters, knitting and crochet circles meet for tea and toast, along with some fast and furious yarn work. Live music, food and shop discounts abound, with fun for the entire family.

Saturday mornings, residents enjoy the Farmer’s Market at the City Hall parking lot, featuring year-round vendors. During the winter, 15 hardy farms sell their wares, while the summer brings over 40 different vendors selling fresh produce, dairy, meat, plants and arts items. The Fairfax County Master Gardeners man a booth to answer all of your plant questions while you shop.

A Small Town in a Big City

Falls Church works hard as a community to maintain its small town feel. New development is bringing job opportunities, more affordable housing, and businesses to the region, while maintaining the balance of neighborly connection between residents. Whether searching for a spot to raise a family, an accessible place to retire, or a convenient home base for commuting to a federal job, Falls Church is an excellent choice.
